The GIMS Pyramid for Precision Healthcare

6th November, 2025 Dr Natalie Thorne

The GIMS Pyramid! It’s like Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, but for genomics.

We’ve spent years developing Genomical; working with governance experts, scientists, clinicians, bioinformaticians, IT leaders, and consumers to understand what those foundations look like.

Here’s what we’ve learned.

1. Data Governance Comes First
Before writing a line of code, know who, what, where, why, and how data will be used.

We didn’t adopt an off-the-shelf framework — we built one specifically for clinical genomics, addressing: How should data sharing between labs be governed? Who is accountable for what? How do we ensure compliance with privacy regulations?

Every Genomical user completes genomics-specific privacy training.

2. Cyber Security — “Security by Design”
You can’t retrofit security. It must be baked in from day one — across design, development, deployment, and operations.

With Genomical, security is a mindset as much as a mechanism. Without it, gaps become almost impossible to close later.

3. Orchestration — Making Data Flow
Genomic data is massive and complex. Moving it efficiently requires purpose-built infrastructure.

That’s why Genomical includes the Genomic Orchestration Service (GOS) — the heart of our platform. It enables seamless, scalable data movement across systems, replacing brittle point-to-point integrations with a unified orchestration layer built for healthcare.

4. Data Availability — The Forgotten Pillar
Security isn’t only about confidentiality and integrity — it’s also about availability.

Genomic data must be findable, accessible, and reusable (FAIR). There’s little point storing data if it can’t be retrieved and reused when needed. Availability ensures we recognise and reuse the value of genomic data over time.

5. Interoperability — Speaking a Common Language
True interoperability means shared understanding.

Genomical is built on FHIR, enabling communication with other systems like LIMS and EMRs. Meanwhile, GOS creates genomic interoperability — connecting disparate genomic tools through a common model so labs can “connect once, access many.”

6. Re-analysis — Unlocking New Answers
With governance, security, orchestration, availability, and interoperability in place, re-analysis becomes routine.

Genomical enables secure, automated re-analysis, helping previously undiagnosed patients and supporting discovery across a lifetime.

7. Research & Precision Healthcare
Once data can be safely reused and accessed, we unlock the next layer — research and innovation.

Through trusted research environments, genomic data can inform research without leaving the system.

When every layer is in place we achieve what we’ve all been working toward: precision healthcare.
